Water Cooled Lightning
Firstly Hydroponics industry used the phenomenon of water cooled lights to grow plants. Water cooled lightning is generally available in higher wattage range with 400W and 600 W. These light use standard HPS and Metal Halide lamps, which are fit into a water jacket that removes the heat while still allowing all the visible light to reach the plants. The water lightning system consists of other accessories such as reflector, relay, remote ballast etc. The lamp of water cooled system is encased within two tubes. Water is flowed throw the tube and maximum heat transfer occurs.
For proper growth
For proper growth of plants, the lights are mounted close to plants to offer required light to reach plants. Plants are not damaged due to burning from intensive heat from these high wattage lights.
Parts of water cooled lights
- Cooling system- cold water is taken from large reservoirs. Large reservoirs provide common use for several lamps. Growers can choose any source for clean water supply. Clean water is required for proper operation of system. Municipal supply is recommended as it is continuous and clean from impurities.
- Water is pumped from the reservoir through the filter then passes through the lights and is then cooled in the heat exchanger. Heat exchanger is used to convert hot water into cold water for repeatedly use of same amount of water.
- Heat produced from these lights is ventilated out in lake or rivers. This system consists of the pump that transfers the heat in the reservoir to the lake. The water is pumped from the reservoir and through the hose in the lake where it gives off its heat before re-entering to the lights.
Several advanced systems incorporate with the basic features of cooling systems to optimize lighting performance and enhance grow-room productivity. Several growers noticed various benefits for this water cooled system such as control of pests. This system lead to reduction of pests and use of pesticides is reduced for plant growth.
